50 years ago: “Greater convenience for the expected throng of passengers in 1964 will result from new schedules announced by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad for ‘The Silverton,’ the historic narrow gauge steam train in the Animas Valley. Daily round trips between Durango and Silverton will start on June 3, five days earlier than last season.”
25 years ago: “After years of falling short of its mark, the La Plata County United Way vaulted thousands of dollars beyond its fundraising goal for 1988. The volunteer committee raised $100,388 during its fund drive between Sept. 7 and Nov. 30. The agency’s goal was $68,000.”
