And the West is History

100 years ago: “News of marvelous new tungsten discoveries in San Juan County, is given in the Silverton Standard copies of which were brought over the great snowslides in the Animas Canon by daring snowshoers to the Durango Democrat.”

75 years ago: An advertisement for Wayt’s Toggery read: “Good news for toes. Shoes by Air Step. $6. Our new Air Steps will show you just what’s smart in light-and-airy types. Air Steps, you remember, are the shoes with the pavement conditioned Magic Sole, thousands of tiny air cells, that buoy your feet and lift your spirits high.”

50 years ago: “Charles Reid Jr., director of admissions at Fort Lewis College, reported the winter trimester enrollment stands at 963 which represents an increase of about eight percent over the same period last year.”

25 years ago: “By the end of the month, Durango police and fire dispatchers no longer will have to rely solely on their wits to find 911 callers who are too stricken, afraid of prankish to talk. An enhanced 911 telephone system, scheduled to being operation Feb. 26, will flash the address of the caller on a small gray screen in front of the dispatcher.”
