100 years ago: “Although but very little moisture fell in Durango proper, incoming ranchers reported that there was quite a heavy rain on the Florida Mesa during the day. The rain did a whole lot of good and was appreciated.”
75 years ago: “Two Denver men, who were in the Durango-Ouray section of the state for the first time, were highly enthusiastic over the mountain scenery. They had, of course, been through the mountains of northern Colorado but had seen nothing there that could touch the ‘Little Switzerland of America.’”
50 years ago: “Fort Lewis College has announced the names of five students who have completed the work for the baccalaureate degree. They constitute the first graduates for Fort Lewis as a senior college.”
25 years ago: A Durango man handcuffed himself to the door handle of a white 1961 Porsche in the show lot of Garlick’s Getaways and vowed to stay put until the owner of the car dealership declared him the winner of a contest. The contest in question stated that the person who kept his or her hand on a 1977 Chevrolet Vega the longest won the car. The man fell sleep during the contest and his hand slipped off the car.
