And the West is History

100 years ago: “Grain and vegetables – Are now the leading imports from the agricultural sections. The exports are confined largely to wagoning coal on the return trip. Yesterday’s in take showed a fine lot of cabbage, potatoes, parsnips and turnips – and the wise provider is filling his cellars.”

75 years ago: An advertisement for Turner Investment Co. read, “For sale: Once in a while we are privileged to offer a real bargain in Durango property. Here is one! This home, located at 934 Third Ave. 5 rooms, bath, cellar, all furnished, coal range and heatrola, will sell complete for $1,800.00 ready to move into. First come-first served. It won’t last long.”

50 years ago: “With blocking up of the east windows in the room as part of the construction of the new La Plata County Jail addition, the district courtroom was in the dark – literally. Dist. Judge James M. Noland met with the county commissioners to discuss the problem since a power failure in the court house could plunge the room into complete darkness while a trail might be in progress and a prisoner present in the court room. ... Work will start almost immediately to replace a portion of the south wall of the court room with glass block, to provide natural light, and also to contain windows which will permit more adequate ventilation.”

25 years ago: “The body of a 42-year-old drowning victim was recovered from Vallecito Reservoir two weeks after the man fell from his boat. A canine search and rescue team from Utah discovered the body while enroute to a location that their canines had alerted them to the day before.”
