And the West is History

100 years ago: A private zoo performance was held by the Wells Fargo express force and featured a caged mountain lion that was shipped by its capturer John Crawford of Mancos.

75 years ago: Carl Wetter of Durango was killed instantly after a violent but unintentionally murderous dispute with Sam Green, also of Durango. Green was to be charged with counts of manslaughter in court.

50 years ago: James Frederick Day was charged with careless driving following an accident on Junction Creek, which left 124 feet of two-wheel skid marks on the road after the car skidded 170 feet out of control, jumped a 6-inch curb, hit a city of Durango sign and traveled another 53 feet before it was stopped by a small pine tree.

25 years ago: A 39-year-old man who was “very upset” wandered into the Durango Police Department lobby and asked to be arrested even though he hadn’t done anything illegal.
