100 years ago: While hauling wood, Durangoan Jack Akers “met with a peculiar accident that might easily have proved fatal.” He was “riding on the hounds of the wagon” when one of the rear wheels struck a rail and bucked him into the air, almost lodging his head between the spokes of the wheel.
75 years ago: James Deti, a Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad section foreman from Lumberton, New Mexico, was in Durango for the week to see his sister, Mrs. Joe Fanto, and his daughter, Mrs. John L. Craig.
50 years ago: Carol Lynn Carville of Farmington and Durango received a cut on her forehead and possibly a fractured shoulder after the rear tires of her 1960 Chevrolet Corvair blew out and her car overturned 11 miles south of Durango on U.S. Highway 550.
25 years ago: According to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, a man threatened to have “a bomb at a security gate” in the 1300 block of County Road 309. Deputies found no such bomb.
