And the West is History

100 years ago: There was a report published to warn people that “trouble in a different form lurks on the trail of stock owners.” It related to I.M. Shaffer of Animas Valley, who “lost a good dairy cow when the animal fell and ruptured a blood vessel.”

75 years ago: G. Henry Gray and Marshall Fletcher were selected by the remaining members of the town of Silverton council to fill sudden vacancies in office.

50 years ago: An 18-year-old man from Ignacio was driving two friends from Bayfield to Ignacio when his pickup truck went off the right side of the road and caused him to be thrown from the vehicle, which then ran him over. He was admitted to hospital with numerous injuries, but he was expected to live.

25 years ago: A man was harassing customers and asking for rides at the Texaco station on East Fourth Avenue and Sixth Street. Police discovered he had an outstanding warrant and took him to jail.
