And the West is History

100 years ago: “The Jarvis garage, which recently took up the agency for the famous ‘Grant Six,’ sold one of these excellent new cars to G.G. Goodman, cashier in the First National Bank. The Grant machine is well-recommended by all owners and promises to be a welcome addition to the list of cars operated in this section.”

75 years ago: The Kiva Theatre was showing “Mutiny on the Bounty,” starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable. The billing read: “Men like these shall live and die – but their deeds shall live forever ... in the hearts of all peoples the world over ...!”

50 years ago: “There were 35 members of Calvary Baptist Church at the airport to see the Rev. Wayne Van Gelderen off for his world tour. He will meet two pastors in Denver who will accompany him on his trip. After traveling through the Philippines and the Orient, they will meet Dr. Bob Jones, Jr., president of Bob Jones university in Greenville, S.C., for a tour of the Holy Land.”

25 years ago: “The yo-yo is back. That toy on a string that won the heart of children 20 years ago has recaptured the hearts of those same people today – namely, Snowdown’s board of directors. The yo-yo is the gimmick of Durango’s 12th annual Snowdown.”
