And the West is History

100 years ago: “John Sharp, of Cripple Creek, mining expert, returned from a trip to the Needleton district, where he found snow yet interfered with viewing properties.”

75 years ago: “Durango’s headquarters battery of the Colorado National Guard will leave enroute to Camp George West, near Golden, for a two week annual camp of the National Guard of this state.”

50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Girl About Town: “Mrs. George Barclay gave the lesson when Animas Valley Garden Club met for a flower arrangement workshop. She made several artistic arrangements and explained the technique that guarantees good arrangements.”

25 years ago: “Fireworks will sparkle and spew in Durango after all on July 4, but the size of the display will depend on the generosity of donors. Chuck Norton who is leading the fund-raiser hopes to raise $10,000 by an extended deadline of June 12. But he’ll order the fireworks from the Salt Lake City manufacturer with whatever funds he raises. ... Norton began raising money for fireworks when, after 32 years, the American Legion announced it would not provide the Independence Day show at the fairgrounds.”
