100 years Ago: “Albert Kern drove his mother in from her ranch. All the Kern family now have ranches and all are being cultivated in grain or grass except ‘Balsys’ – his crop is jackrabbits and sunflowers.”
75 years ago: An advertisement for Wilson Land Agency read: “Here are two grabs. One is 200 acres, bunch of cattle, ranch machinery, good team, harness, HH goods, house, barn. Three sections Taylor grazing adjoining leased. $5,000, terms. Make an offer. The other is a lot and a half on Second Avenue between 13th and 14th for $150. Nice site for house.”
50 years ago: The Kiva Theatre was showing “Lawrence of Arabia” starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins and Jose Ferrer. The billing read, “Winner of seven Academy Awards. Best picture of the year!”
25 years ago: “U.S. Senate passage of Animas-La Plata water project legislation, described as rivaling ‘the perils of Pauline,’ will keep the project on track another year. ... Under the bill, Colorado’s two Ute tribes agree to settle water claims on San Juan Basin streams in exchange for water from the Animas-La Plata project and $60.5 million in development funds. The legislation was seen as one of the last major hurdles for the controversial water project, which has been in various planning stages for the past 80 years.”
