And the West is History

100 years ago: “Grant Morris, the dentist, suffered a fracture of his left leg when an automobile driven by Dr. A. W. Robbins, in which he was a passenger, went into the ditch on the Florida Mesa on the return from a professional trip to Ignacio. Morris was taken to Mercy hospital and the injured member given prompt attention.”

75 years ago: “Manual training departments of Durango High School and Smiley Junior High will hold their annual woodworking and mechanical drawing exhibit. Furniture to be displayed will include beds, chests, chests of drawers, dressers, book racks, humidors and dining, bedside, occasional, magazine and coffee tables.”

50 years ago: “The Animas River, measured at the Western Colorado Power Co. plant at 14th Street, hit its high point so far this year with a measurement of 5.6 feet.”

25 years ago: “Ed Freienmuth is going to the birds. The veteran professor and administrator is retiring after 20 years at Fort Lewis College. And in addition to being an accountant and member of the Colorado Bar, Freienmuth is a falconer. He plans to spend much of his new free time flying his peregrine falcon, Jenny.”
