And the West is History

“Undergoing a major face-lift and widening in August of 1964 Durango’s Main Avenue Bridge started out with this set of drawings made by Silas W. Smith about 1904. This portion of Smith’s original linen drawing, from the city engineer’s archives, shows the intricate stonework with which the original structure was built. A floor plan, part of the same drawing, showed a foot way on either side, a wagon way in each lane, and street car tracks down the center.”

100 years ago: “L. H. Pierce, the Ignacio auto livery man who brought a party over from the fair left for home after giving his machine a rest in a local corral.”

75 years ago: “One case of the infantile paralysis has been reported in Durango. The home has been quarantined. Quarantined restrictions at Vallecito Dam have been tightened. Absolutely no travel through quarantine lines is permitted without written permission.”

50 years ago: “Agreement has been reached by all parties involved in plans to widen the course of the Animas River near the new Main Avenue bridge. ... The widening of the channel is hoped to slow the flow of the river so that ice for skating may be formed on the upstream approach to the new bridge, along with making the embankment more attractive.”

25 years ago: “The La Plata Medical Society president said that area doctors will do whatever they can to block the lease of the tax-supported La Plata Community Hospital to Brim & Associates Inc, a private, for-profit company. The doctors would consider sponsoring drives to dissolve the hospital district, to recall board members or to force the lease issue to a public vote.”
