And the West is History

100 years ago: “Lloyd Huntsman of the Pine River country was in from the Vallecito to get a bunch of supplies for the people up there, and also for the state spawn-takers at Emerald Lake. He is now running a pack train from the Vallecito to Cave Basin, into the fishing grounds up the river, or to any other place in that direction that the wandering traveler desired to go.”

75 years ago: “Gilbert Gordon took over the active management of the Durango bakery having purchased the bakery from the former owners, Mrs. Adeline Crotta, Magglore Crotta, and Louie Crotta.”

50 years ago: MESA VERDE – “Lynda Bird Johnson, daughter of the president, left Mesa Verde National Park after a day and a half visit there. Her destination is unknown. ... Very few other visitors to the park appeared to recognize the young woman who has been in the Southwest of the past several weeks.”

25 years ago: “A light drizzle dampened the wildfire burning in the Menefee Wilderness Study Area east of Mesa Verde National Park after burning 920 acres of juniper, ponderosa and oak brush. ... Sixty firefighters were arriving from the Front Range to assist the crews on the fire line bringing the total number of firefighters to 200.”
