And the West is History

100 years ago: “It is the duty of every citizen in the San Juan Basin and every mine operator shipping to this section to do all that can be accomplished toward encouraging a zinc smelter for Durango.”

75 years ago: “Bridge Club played this week with Mrs. Frank Broud.”

50 years ago: “Last week’s candy hands, those bridge hands having nothing above a nine in them, were won by Mrs. Howard Lutz, Mrs. Earl Johnson, Mrs. John Watfon, Frank Miller, Ron Herrin and Rick Cotter. Each winner is awarded a box of candy by the Service Drug Company.”

25 years ago: “People are talking about ... the colors on the slopes of Purgatory below as you ride up on the chair lifts. The colorful ski outfits, which now include brightly hued skis, boots and even bindings, as well as jackets, pants and hats, make the snowy mountain below a kaleidoscope of colors.”
