75 years ago: “Members of the local National Guard unit will leave for Camp George West near Golden on one of the longest marches ever made in one day by military convoy. A distance of 415 miles will be covered before the unit reaches camp. The convoy of four trucks and one reconnaissance car carrying men and their communications equipment will make the trek to the encampment of Colorado National Guard at Camp George West near Golden.”
50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Silverton News: “The news of the week, in number one place is, loud speakers have been outlawed. Of course, a few were against the action. However, on the whole, I believe most residents are pleased with the action. Most tourists come to Silverton expecting to see a quiet, peaceful mountain town. Many were not happy over the racket and din.”
25 years ago: “After a last-minute attempt to withdraw his guilty plea in 6th Judicial District Court, Lloyd Raymond Bates was sentenced to 16 years in a state penitentiary for his involvement in the bombing of two Durango 3.2 bars in 1986 and 1987. Bates’ son, Shane Bates, was also sentenced for his involvement in the same crimes. He received a five-year sentence in a penitentiary, followed by eight years of probation.”
