100 years ago: “Charles Eckburg, the first man who dared to make the trip down La Plata Canyon, with terrible snowslides running up and down the canyon for 10 miles, arrived in Durango with the news that all the miners at the Columbus mines are still alive. It was simply a miracle that they came through the recent great storm safely.”
75 years ago: “Miss Bessie Armstead, Gossard Corsetiere well-known to Durango women, will be in Graden’s store to show her new spring lines.”
50 years ago: “Mrs. O.C. Francis gave the program on ‘Women in a Changing World.’ She told of the slow progress in emancipating women, starting with the time of Caesar and his wife. Actually little change was notable until the last 100 years, and only in the last few decades has there been considerable development in the equality of woman.”
25 years ago: “An ordinance to control nuisance cats will be on the agenda when the Durango City Council meets. The proposed ordinance would make it illegal for an owner to ‘fail to maintain reasonable control’ over his cat.”
