100 years ago: The Elks were preparing for “the big Christmas tree” that was “for the children of the entire community.” Reverend Courtice made a short speech to the children, under supervision of Mr. Santa Claus.
75 years ago: Two navy men from Bayfield, Harold Carmack and Gene Barry, were listed as “missing” Sunday, Dec. 21, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Both were recent Bayfield High School graduates, and enlisted in the navy around the same time, a year previous. No further details were given.
50 Years Ago: Axel Cedarwall, 30-year resident of La Plata Canyon, died at age 87. Born in Sweden, Cedarwall immigrated to the United States in 1902, at the age of 22. He lived in La Plata Canyon until his house burned Dec. 16, 1965. He finished out his days in the La Plata mountains.
25 years ago: A drunken man was trespassing at City Market, 6 Town Plaza, and was taken to Detox. A woman skipped out on her bar tab at El Rancho Bar, 975 Main Ave. A Coca-Cola vending machine was tampered with at the Alpine Motel, 3515 Main Ave. Two people, one man and one woman, were taken to Detox after being caught driving under the influence.
