And the West is History

100 years ago: “Buckskin Charley, Nanece, Manuel, Steve and a number of other Ute Indians from the reservation at Ignacio, with their wives and families, camped in town for a time. The party is returning to Ignacio from a trip to Navajo Springs.”

75 years ago: “Bert Thompson of the Bessie G mine has just sent out a five ton shipment of ore, mostly high-grade rock. Bert was lugging a hunk of rock around town bearing a considerable showing of free gold.”

50 years ago: “Mrs. Harold Peterson, who works in the county treasurers office, has just returned from a long and sentimental journey. She was driven through the south by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Tubbs. Mrs. Peterson was born in Mississippi and had not been back there since childhood.”

25 years ago: MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK – “Mother Nature is taking her sweet time restoring the land on which the Long Mesa Fire burned in July 1989. The fire was the largest in Mesa Verde National Park history.” A lightning strike caused a fire that burned 2,700-acres.
