100 years ago: “Recent discoveries contiguous to the Needle Mountain Mining District on the Pine River about four miles from Cave Basin are attracting prospectors from all directions. This section has been worked with varying results for many years, but now the geology of the camp is more generally understood and pleasing results are multiplying.”
75 years ago: “Fort Lewis Ag College will receive 13 of the 31 Bayfield young people who are planning to continue their education in the higher branch of the arts and sciences. Four students are entering a nurses’s training course, one a beauty course and one a business course.”
50 years ago: “Special tickets for an extra-special run of the Durango-Silverton narrow gauge train will go on sale. The run will be the first annual Durango-Silverton Appreciation Day. It’s a year-end salute to the famed attraction that this year has broken all kinds of records in attracting tourists to the area. And there’s more good news – all tickets will be half-price. That is, $2.75 for adults and $2.20 for children 15 years and under.”
25 years ago: “For the sixth straight quarter, total deposits in 14 area commercial banks declined – this latest period by .42 percent. However, local demand edged upward slightly from the same period in 1987. Almost $391.5 million was deposited in the second quarter of this year. More than $251 million in loans was generated.”
