And the West is History

100 years ago: “Durango is dividing up between the Mountain Rundalet gold, silver, copper strikes on the Upper Pine River about four miles south of Cave Basin, and the ‘sheep herders’ find on Lime Creek on west side of the Animas River about 10 miles southwest of Silverton.”

75 years ago: “A number of Durango fishermen will ‘patronize home industry’ from now on. A lot of pessimists drove a long way to catch nothing, and their faces were colored a trifle on the red side when they saw the fine catch of an optimist who walked down to the Animas River and hauled in the big ones as fast as he could throw out his line.”

50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Gem Village News, “The summer season is about over here. School started again bright and early and teachers and pupils alike deserted the rest of the community for their hours in the classroom. But time flies faster all the time (it seems) and no doubt the summer of ‘64 will be here before we know it.’”

25 years ago: “Rural telephone lines in Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio are scheduled for upgrading in the next two years, part of a $11.7 million project planned by U.S. West Communication for Southwest Colorado. The improvements will make it possible for more than 4,500 area party-line customers to become eligible for single or two-party service.”
