100 years ago: A classified advertisement read: “For Sale – The residence properties of W.T. Kirkpatrick on Third Avenue, between Eighth and Ninth streets, are for sale. Low prices and items can be obtained from his agents, Rockwood & Perkins.”
75 years ago: An advertisement read: “Use Connor’s milk produced in our own dairy farm from a clean, healthy herd – and correctly handled to your door. Connor’s Dairy.”
50 years ago: “Johnny Carson of ‘Tonight Show’ fame has given the Durango area a lot of publicity since his return to the show after vacationing 10 days in this area. Carson showed photos of this area and made a lot of nice remarks – which were of tremendous value, publicity-wise, considering the millions of viewers. In return, the city council OK’d a request to appoint Carson honorary mayor of Durango.”
25 years ago: “Turning out a champion animal for the 4-H Junior Livestock Auction is hard work, but apparently the Lesky family has the formula down pat. For the second year in a row, the sons of Jean and Joe Lesky of Bondad have turned out the Grand Champion Steer at the La Plata County Fair. This year, Josh Lesky walked away with the honors. Josh’s brother, Joaquin, won the Grand Champion Steer last year and also turned in a first-place steer for this year’s auction.”
