100 years ago: “Reports are being circulated of a fine new strike in the La Plata district, but definite particulars have not as yet been obtainable.”
75 years ago: “County and district officials investigating the theft of a safe from the John Dunbar general store at Dove Creek have announced that they located the stolen safe some 12 miles northwest of Dove Creek abandoned in the sage brush. Although taking $50 and $75 in cash, some endorsed checks and money orders, the looters left in the safe notes and mortgages with a face value of about $5,000.”
50 years ago: “Sixteen cowboys – only a small portion of the 200-plus signed up – are going to face a tough challenge in the two sections of brahma bull riding during the first go-around of three Spanish Trails Fiesta rodeo performances. None of the bulls have allowed their clinging cargo to stay aboard the time limit during their past two rodeos.”
25 years ago: “Two Colorado Vietnam veterans have bicycled 400 miles in the state through 100-degree sun and chilly rain to bring a message to Colorado. ‘We never want another Vietnam to happen in this country,’ said Charles Trinemeyer during a press conference in Durango. The journey has been made in a custom-made bike because Trinemeyer lost his right leg during combat in Vietnam. His copilot on the bicycle-built-for-two is Gary McIntire.”
