And the West is History

100 years ago: “The case of Andrew Frost and Peter Litz, charged with horse stealing, occupied the greater part of the day in district court. A half dozen or more witnesses were introduced by the state.”

75 years ago: “Rarely has a Durango audience had the opportunity of hearing as accomplished a musician as Arthur Henderson. It is indeed unusual to find a pianist who can bring the clarity and precision necessary to a perfect interpretation of a Bach prelude, and at the same time approach the moderns with enthusiasm and sympathy.”

50 years ago: “Annual career day for school district 9-R will be held at Durango High School. During the day, students will be given an opportunity to meet with representatives of numerous occupational fields and schools in an effort to aid the students in the selection of a career program.”

25 years ago: “By the end of the day, Durangoans won’t see any activity on Smelter Mountain until April next year. Operations are shutting down for winter and the big ‘bathtub’ trucks that move rubble away from the mountain will make their last hauls today. Out of more than 2 million yards of contaminated material that was dumped on the site between 1943 and 1963, crews have removed all but approximately 700,000 yards.”
