And the West is History

100 years ago: “A woman called at the home of a Durango citizen yesterday and said she was selling groceries for a Denver house and that she had some very attractive bargains to offer.”

75 years ago: “Four Durango fishing enthusiasts, Jack Turner, Floyd Gregg, Eirwin Selby and Floyd Barnes, left last Saturday for Guaymas, Old Mexico, where about this time they should be revelling in deep sea fishing.”

50 years ago: “Rumbling brasses, lilting flutes, creamily-blending voices and Bach with a beat were featured at the annual spring concert of the Fort Lewis College bands and choruses. To a stirring, uncavalry-like cadence, accompanied by fife and drum, the 70-piece band marched into the auditorium in the first public showing of their blue-and-gold cavalry uniforms, complete with white felt hats and white gauntlet gloves.”

25 years ago: “Durango School District 9-R plans to pick up the pieces of its superintendent search the first week of April, since Peter Wharton backed out of his contract here Thursday night.”
