And the West is History

100 years ago: “Ray and Hanford Miller, partners of the renowned mercantile firm of Miller, Miller of Kline, were in the city, transacting business. Those boys are hustlers.”

75 years ago: “Margaret Ann Adams celebrated her 13th birthday by inviting 15 friends to a Gipsey Party. Guests came, each one attired in a colorful costume and each one prepared to enjoy to the fullest the gala evening outlined for them by their vivacious young hostess. After an evening enjoyably devoted to playing games, doing stunts and telling fortunes the ‘band’ foraged for their food, which was cooked, deliciously, over an open fire in the Adams’ back yard.”

50 years ago: “A program on ‘Outdoors Cookery and Patio Lighting’ will be presented by Mrs. Ruby Dooley, home economist for Western Colorado Power Co.”

25 years ago: “Five speakers, Woodsy Owl, Smokey the Bear, a smattering of llamas and a chorus of singers celebrated the opening of the Colorado Trail as 200 spectators looked on. The event at the Junction Creek trailhead, marked the end of 15 years of work on the trail, which winds its way for 470 miles from Durango to Denver.”
