And the West is History

100 years ago: “The original and only ‘Fatty’ Crawford was in from Hay Gulch yesterday, spreading rays of happiness wherever he went.”

75 years ago: “Members of the N.O.W. are sponsoring a Beano game to be held at the Odd Fellows Hall.”

50 years ago: “Winner of the 1963 All-American Soap Box Derby in Durango was Guy Lewis, 13 year old former Durangoan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond L. Lewis of Cortez. Conferences were under way in preparation for Lewis’ trip to Akron, Ohio, where he will represent Southwest Colorado in the national Soap Box Derby.”

25 years ago: “Another delay has cropped up in the case of an 18-year-old Bayfield man accused of holding a banker and his family at gunpoint and kidnapping the banker’s son, marking the third time in two months that the defendant has requested a continuance on his case. The man asked for a three-week continuance in 6th Judicial Court so his parents can find him a different attorney.”
