And the West is History

100 years ago: “J.C. Arthur killed a big brown bear in Ignacio Canyon after it had been caught in his trap, and several of his friends here dined on bear steak. The bear had been fattened on berries, brook trout and honey.”

75 years ago: “The Herald-Democrat, joining in the celebration of Labor Day, will not publish a paper Monday. Banks, public offices and most of the businesses in Durango will be closed Monday in commemoration of the day honoring labor.”

50 years ago: “Youngsters in School District 9-R started back to class today for the beginning of the 1965-1966 school year, and a certain amount of harassment was evident among some of the administrators as they faced a number of staff and curriculum changes. Durango High School reports an enrollment of 900 students compared with last year’s record enrollment of 853.”

25 years ago: “Hotel rooms in Durango for the Labor Day weekend are getting hard to find, according to area hotel and motel operators. With more than a hundred people already staying in town working on a Hollywood movie, thousands of students and families expected in town for Fort Lewis College registration and teams arriving for the upcoming World Mountain Bike Championships, little room is left for holiday travelers.”
