25 years ago: “Crossing the U.S. in a tiny, two-stroke, two-cylinder 1964 East German Trabant, Rolf Becker, 43, of Halle, East Germany, a world record holder, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, for playing a hurdy-gurdy (crank organ) continuously for 48 hours, will claim another title when he arrives in Hollywood next month. No one has yet driven across the continent in the unique automobile, known for its lack of performance and peculiar construction, which includes body parts of plastic and paper. Normally, Becker earns his living in Europe as a street musician and comedian.”
