And the West is History

100 years ago: “The fire department was called to the North Side by an alarm turned in at box 42 when employes of the light company attempted to readjust the wires in a box they had disconnected in their line of work.”

75 years ago: “The Durango High School band evidently made a big hit with the crowds at the Colorado State Fair. A letter was written by the president of Pueblo Unlimited, a division of the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce, that stated, ‘I have just witnessed the most thrilling exhibition of precision marching I have ever seen performed, done by the Durango band.”

50 years ago: “So far this year, La Plata County Clerk Lena Tucker has issued 111 marriage licenses while the District Court has had 60 divorce actions filed. Although this may look like about one divorce to every two marriages, the figures are somewhat deceiving. It must be remembered that only La Plata County residents file for divorce in La Plata County District Court. Persons from other counties and states may take out marriage licenses in the county.”

25 years ago: “The city of Durango lost 2,305 residents, but La Plata County grew by 4,973, according to preliminary figures from the 1990 census. ... According to the U.S. Census figures, the population of La Plata County is 32,168, up 27 percent from 27,195 in 1980. But the population of Durango is down almost 20 percent from 11,649 in 1980.”
