And the West is History

100 years ago: “It developed that the city was practically without preachers, and that even the Rev. R.S. Fairchild, the only one left, was preparing to leave. The Baptist and Presbyterian churches and the Christian, are without pastors. The Rector Burgoon, of St. Mark’s who has resigned, is in New Mexico, and Captain Thompson, of the Salvation Army, is in the east. Time for a feller to keep sober and quiet like.”

75 years ago: “A secret was revealed this week which caused more than a ripple of excitement when the former Mary Belle Andrews and Gordon Seaburn announced that they had been married since last Sept. 21. The couple exchanged vows in Monticello, Utah, almost a year ago and successfully managed to keep their secret until the present time.”

50 years ago: “Durango High School reports an enrollment of 900 students compared with last year’s record enrollment of 853.”

25 years ago: “Although the AAA Auto Club of Colorado is predicting gasoline prices will increase as much as 10 cents a gallon for the Labor Day weekend, local suppliers say they believe fuel prices are leveling off. According to AAA, the average price for unleaded fuel statewide is $1.33 a gallon, slightly less than the prices local consumers have been paying at the pump.”
