100 years ago: “Reports of storms from the outside filtered into town. A big storm was said to be raging on Cumbres and Silverton was reported hard hit with a big storm. The telegraph wires to Grand Junction were grounded, and the metropolis of the Basin was almost encircled with disreputable and careless weather.”
75 years ago: “Rather than let them spoil and go to waste, James M. Noland is offering plenty of crab apples ‘free for nothing’ to those who will pick ‘em. He has three crab trees loaded down with fruit in the front yard of his home at 1761 East Second Ave.”
50 years ago: MESA VERDE – “With two days yet to go in the month, a new record for one month’s visits was set at Mesa Verde National Park with 108,115 counted through the gate. In July, the park had more than 100,000 visitors for the first time in any single month.”
25 years ago: “Flags representing 20 countries are flying over Durango today to welcome visitors and participants for the World Mountain Bike Championships scheduled Sept. 11-14 in Durango. City of Durango public works crews hoisted the first set of flags at Gateway Park in preparation for the first-ever international races. In all, 26 of the 28 countries participating in the races will be represented by flags displayed at Gateway Park, Chapman Hill, Purgatory and Tamarron.”
