And the West is History

100 years ago: “The bodies of W.E. (“Red”) Ritter and Mrs. Ruth Hamblin were found in the Heckman cottage, 2180 West Third Ave., by night Marshal Garbanati. The two had evidently been dead for some time. Ritter had a .38 caliber automatic Colt’s revolver clutched in his left hand and all evidences point to a murder and suicide.”

75 years ago: “A number of pheasants and chukars have been received from the state game and fish commission and will be on exhibition at the hatchery. The birds are to be released in the basin, a continuation of the effort to stock this locality with game birds to replace the fast disappearing grouse. ... Chukars are a bird imported from the mountain country of India.”

50 years ago: The Rocket, located three miles South on U.S. Highway 550-160, was showing “Goldfinger” starring Sean Connery and Stan Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb.”

25 years ago: “Jimmy Bartholomew, 24, of Durango was named All Around Champion Cowboy and 1990 Bullriding Champion at the 1990 Durango Pro Rodeo awards banquet. He brought home a championship saddle and custom-made buckle as awards for his riding abilities. Bartholomew, who has been riding in rodeos since he was 14, says he presently ranks 12th of all competitors in the Mountain States Circuit.”
