And the West is History

100 years ago: “Thirty or more embryo teachers gathered at the high school building to take the examinations for rural teachers under the supervision of county superintendent Miss Florence Salazar.”

75 years ago: “This time it was a 6½ pound rainbow in Vallecito dam that fell victim to a fisherman’s strategy. The fisherman was V.C. Hague of Gallup, New Mexico. Hague says the fish was caught on a worm. It was an unusually lively worm, however, he explains.”

50 years ago: “What the Weidman mill needs most is a dry weekend in the high country. John S. Weidman said this amount of moisture has been a problem since December. He said it’s been so difficult to get logs out that the mill’s reserve supply is seriously depleted. The mill has been operating upon two shifts. Weidman said that, unless the mountains dry out promptly, the mill may have to reduce operations temporarily.”

25 years ago: “The flag poles along U.S. Highway 550/160 and Gateway Park will number 20. They will initially fly the flags of the participating countries in the World Mountain Bike Championships, but will remain up for other community events. Following flag protocol, the U.S. flag will be on the first pole to the right; participating nations’ flags will then be in alphabetical order right to left.
