100 years ago: “The city schools open next Monday, Aug. 30. This week Superintendent Smiley will be in his office in the high school building every day, to meet with prospective pupils and parents with regard to entering the schools.”

75 years ago: “Thirty-six graduate nurses of the Mercy Hospital were honored by the Sisters of Mercy at a charming late afternoon party. A delicious luncheon was served after which the afternoon was devoted to playing informal games and visiting.”

50 years ago: “Father William B. Faherty a frequent guest at Mercy Hospital, and sometimes acting chaplain, has just been notified that production on his book A Wall for San Sebastian will start this fall at MGM in Hollywood. A Wall for San Sebastian, the first novel by Father Faherty, is set on the Texas-Mexico border and centers around the burning by the Camanches of the first mission built in San Sebastian.”

25 years ago: “The Overview Adolescent Day Treatment Program, a learning facility for teenagers with emotional or behavioral disorders, is moving into a permanent home next month in rooms at the former La Plata Community Hospital. Overview’s four teachers and as many as 10 students between the ages of 14 and 16 will begin the program Sept. 4 in 1,118 square feet of remodeled La Plata County Hospital District space. The former intensive care unit, mammography room, ultrasound room and doctors’ lounge are in the finishing stages of a $3,000 remodeling effort, paid for by School District 9-R.”
