And the West is History

100 years ago: “A.L. Barr, Ray Miller and A.C. Brewer, of the Kline Mesa section were in town conferring with County Superintendent Miss Florence Salabar regarding plans for the proposed new school house at Kline. Bonds for $3,000 have been carried by popular vote and already are sold, finding a ready market. It is proposed to build a new school house 44 by 48 feet, big enough for two teachers.”

75 years ago: An advertisement for Wallace G. Mollette, 127 E. 9th St., read, “Wanted – small homes! I have several calls for small homes for sale. Have you been thinking of selling? If so get in touch with me and list your house. Small homes of four or five rooms in good locations will sell this fall. Call me up and tell me where your property is and I’ll come up and look it over. Fall season for selling is starting now, so please hurry.

50 years ago: “A heavy rain in the Hermosa area and another one somewhere up Junction Creek turned river and creek waters red and raised them appreciably. Junction Creek early this morning was a bright red color and flowing swiftly. The Animas River came up only five-hundredths of a foot from rain in the Hermosa area, but it was a muddy red color.

25 years ago: “Southern Ute tribal Judge Maylinn Smith ruled that the tribal court does have the authority to hear the Southern Ute recall election suit filed against the Southern Ute Tribal Council and Election Board, but the judge also ruled that tribal council members are immune from litigation and dismissed them as defendants in the case. The Southern Ute Election Board, however, will remain a defendant in the action filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the Committee for Better Tribal Government. The ACLU is claiming constitutional rights were violated during the Feb. 2 Southern Ute recall election that would have ousted Southern Ute Council Chairman Leonard Burch and four council members.”
