And the West is History

100 years ago: O.A. Dunn, president of the Mesa Verde Oil Co., traveled to Durango from Aztec by automobile to “sink several test holes down in the lower valley.” He had been called to Illinois, where his father was “failing very fast” and “not expected to live long.” The old gentleman was suffering from “a second stroke of paralysis.”

75 years ago: East Side Mart, established December 1938 by Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Ball, scheduled its fourth anniversary celebration.

50 years ago: An “unusual meeting” about how to crossbreed beef cattle to make money was scheduled at the Strater Hotel.

25 years ago: Four Durango German shepherds played parts in an episode of “Unsolved Mysteries,” which was filmed in Telluride.
