100 years ago: “Charley Heathers hurried down from the La Platas to conclude his arrangements for a house here during the coming year. He will move shortly into the house at 1450 Third Ave., in order to give his children the advantages of the big city schools.”
75 years ago: “Practically nothing but favorable criticism for the Fiesta was to be heard. The committee was delighted with the crowd, which was larger than last year.”
50 years ago: “This is the year of surprises on the Durango-Silverton narrow gauge run. A couple of weeks ago a rock and mud slide in the narrow Animas Canyon prevented the two daily trains from completing their run to Silverton. Wednesday night a rail spread and caused derailment of Engine 473 and the first five cars of the train. No one was injured and the train crew got Engineer Steve Conner’s engine back on the track shortly.”
25 years ago: “Despite recent rains throughout Southwest Colorado, the drought that has plagued the Southwest for years is far from over. However, the good news is that this year, moisture levels are up from last year. As of Aug. 1, the Southwest Colorado region had received about 14.25 inches of precipitation since last October. The total amount of precipitation last year was 13.45 inches.”
