And the West is History

75 years ago: “Work is progressing nicely on the project to widen Eighth Avenue south of Sixth Street. The project which will cost about $2,500 will extend south to the Durango city limits, and the bumpy, pitted pavement at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Sixth Street will be smoothed out in the process.”

50 years Ago: “F-101 Jets of the Air National Guard opened both Fiesta parades, and their low level buzzing alerted spectators and got them in the mood for the festive parades. The planes came from Buckley Field, and hit the 10 a.m. starting time right on the nose both days. They flew two patterns over the city, and then made a series of single passes.”

25 years ago: “Gasoline prices continued to rise in Durango while three Denver-area suppliers responded to President Bush’s plea for the industry to control prices during the current Middle East crisis by dropping their wholesale prices. Several Durango service station managers reported they were asked by their corporate employers to raise gasoline prices from 7 to 9 cents a gallon to an average of $1.22.”
