100 years ago: “With the introduction to our city streets of the new bunch of Dodge cars imparted by Senator West and Billy Hiatt, the usually commodious thoroughfares of Diligent Durango have taken on an aspect of megalopolitanism that gives weight for age to Michigan Boulevard. Thirty-seven automobiles, including Fords, were counted in one block on Main Avenue all going or coming.”
75 years ago: “Heavy hail fell in the vicinity of Durango, though none fell in Durango. ... Everett Alexander, who is working with a land reclamation crew near Breen, returned to Durango with his car top drilled full of holes as a result of the hail.”
50 years ago: “Fort Lewis College will receive $19,030, a work study grant to help students finance their education. The Welfare Department announced that 15 colleges in Colorado and two in Wyoming would share $27,569,280.”
25 years ago: “A movie starring actor Billy Crystal will be filmed in the Durango area in September. Construction already has begun on the set west of Durango, said Tony Schweikle, assistant director of the Colorado Film Commission. Schweikle said the movie would bring $1.5 to $2 million to the area. Irby Smith will produce the film for Castle Rock Entertainment, owned by Rob Reiner of ‘All in the Family’ fame. ‘City Slickers’ also will be filmed at locations in New Mexico. In addition to Crystal, the movie will star actors Rick Moranis and Bruno Kirby.”
