And the West is History

100 years ago: “The Emma Mine in Ice Lake is working a force of 12 men during the winter.”

75 years ago: SUNNYSIDE – “School closed with a Christmas program in the evening which was attended by all of the community. The Christmas treats and exchange of gifts concluded the program.”

50 years ago: “There’ll be a new Red Barn next summer. The old Red Barn, an Animas Valley landmark and popular eating place for about seven years, burned to the ground Sept. 4. The K.K. Moores, owners and operators, started to rebuild recently and now the sub floor and the studding are down.”

25 years ago: “Local architect R. Michael Bell and Baldwin Construction were awarded the remodeling contract for the La Plata County Courthouse. Work will begin Jan. 1 and is expected to continue until the spring of 1991. Bell will be responsible for all architectural work and Baldwin will act as construction manager to remodel 32,000 square feet in the old courthouse.”
