100 years ago: Chas Deudal brought in 500,000 eastern brook spawn from the Bert Hosselkuss hatchery, located about a mile outside Creede, to be placed in the Durango fish hatchery, which contained approximately 1.6 million trout.
75 years ago: Durango, “for years,” lacked any real ice skating rink and, after being “widely and loudly deplored by sport fans,” that fact would change with the addition of Folsom’s Pond, located about a quarter mile from the city limits.
50 years ago: Donald W. Thompson of Waco, Texas, ran his car off the road at Shalona Lake but remained uninjured.
25 years ago: Boris Gulko had a good weekend during the U.S. Chess Championship in Durango after he beat John Fedorowicz and Patrick Wolff. However, not even Gulko could catch up to the “wonder kid” of the tournament, Alex Sherzer, who won his fourth game in a row.
