And the West is History

100 years ago: A wanted advertisement read: “A full fledged farm hand, must be experienced irrigator and one not afraid to work. Apply 1415 Third Ave.”

75 years ago: “J. Slatch Farmer, about 50, a miner at the May Day working near Hesperus, underwent an operation for amputation of a foot which was crushed in a mine accident.”

50 years ago: IGNACIO – “Apparently only a can of oil was taken from the Continental Bulk Plant at Ignacio in a burglary, the La Plata County sheriff’s office reported.”

25 years ago: “Entertainer Lawrence Welk has made an offer to purchase the 37-acre Silver Pick Resort near the Purgatory Ski Area north of Durango, a real estate salesman says. The longtime television band leader, who made bubble music famous, has plans to change the resort that currently is ski oriented. ... The resort, which Welk hasn’t personally seen yet, includes 41 condominiums and an 18,000-square-foot lodge with bar and restaurant.”
