100 years ago: J.S. Wolverton, a night railroad depot boss, yelled, “Leave them on,” early in the morning the day before when the “hot-blooded motorman” turned off the lights in the street car.
75 years ago: It was announced that Mrs. J.B. Hersch of Pagosa Springs, president of the Southwest District Federation of Women’s Clubs, and Mrs. T.C. Childress of Durango visited the Federated Women’s Club in Cortez.
50 years ago: Someone stole three large galvanized pipe gates from fences along Colorado Highway 140 in the Marvel area, La Plata County Sheriff Walter Conrad reported. A fourth gate, which enclosed a “field full of steers,” was found partially off its moorings.
25 years ago: A rottweiler bit Park Elementary School reading teacher Gail Sabian, and police officers cited the dog owner for “having a dog at-large and harboring a vicious and unvaccinated animal,” according to a Durango Police Department report. The report also said that the dog was quarantined to determine if it was rabid, and Sabian had gone back to work.
