100 years ago: “The juniors, at their annual class party held in the gym, were hosts to the other pupils of the high school. Various entertaining games were enjoyed during the early part of the evening, and later dancing was indulged in until a late hour. Refreshments consisting of cider, pumpkin pie and cookies were served.”
75 years ago: “Dec. 8 will be the big Christmas preview in Durango on that night the downtown lights will be ‘blacked out,’ following which they will be turned back on and the Christmas lighting in the streets will go on at the same time.”
50 years ago: “Mason school will not be discontinued as an elementary school and used as part of the high school complex. The rumor concerning Mason school apparently has spread and grown throughout the months. The rumor has it that students at Mason would be divided between Riverview and Park elementary schools.”
25 years ago: Purgatory Ski Area was to open: “Low temperatures have allowed snow-making crews to work extra hours putting artificially-created snow on the slopes. The snow augments about half a foot of natural snow that fell over the weekend.”
