And the West is History

100 years ago: Charles Singleton, the manager of Hamlet mine and mill, passed through Durango en route to Colorado Springs on mining business. The sighting indicated that mining operations at Hamlet mine would continue throughout the winter months.

75 years ago: Mrs. Frank Gray of the Bayfield civic club hosted a Christmas party at her home, where participants unanimously voted to purchase $125 worth of defense bonds and stamps. They also purchased children’s books, a total of $18, for the Bayfield library.

50 Years Ago: Despite the lack of snowfall, Durango merchants saw a record-breaking Christmas season, with sales running 10 percent higher than the previous year. It was, in fact, because of the warm weather and lack of snow that merchants were doing so well. People were looking to the spring already, buying lots of light, sweater-like clothing, instead of investing in heavier winter items.

25 years ago: The Fort Lewis College football team was still without a head coach, with former Colorado State University coach Sark Arsllanian having dropped out of the running after formerly expressing interest in the position. The search committee at FLC continued to seek applicants for the position, as a result of Sheldon Keresey’s resignation after a four-year, 6-30 record.
