And the West is History

100 years ago: “After bucking snow for 4½ hours, the Silverton train, leaving here at 9:35, got stuck in a snow bank near the Cascade Spur and came back to town, arriving here at 1:40 this morning.”

75 years ago: “Jim Jones, Durango Studebaker and Terraplane dealer, has received notification that the Studebaker won in every price division in which it competed at the annual Gilmore-Yosemite run, and also won the coveted sweepstakes trophy which is awarded to the car making the best record regardless of price division.”

50 years ago: “La Plata County’s retail sales totaled $39,099,928 in 1964 compared with $36,785,800 in 1962, according to the Colorado Department of Revenue. This jump of $2.3 million is approximately a 6 percent gain.”

25 years ago: “A bond election within the next year may be necessary either to raise money to build a middle school on district land near the Rocket Drive-In or to remodel the deteriorating Smiley Junior High. However, School District 9-R board members said one alternative, which raises several questions, wouldn’t require a bond: repairing the 53-year-old facility with ‘big Band-Aids’ to last for the next five to seven years.”
