And the West is History

100 years ago: Residents of Mancos, Dolores, Rico and other towns west of Durango complained that the mail service had been terrible since mail clerks were taken off the Durango-Ridgway run. Petitions to ask that the clerks be restored to the run were to be sent to the post office department.

75 years ago: Haviland Lake, a “spawning and rearing pond,” was abandoned by the state game and fish commission, to be turned into a game warden’s headquarters. The commission decided to abandon the lake, as well as the buildings and equipment there, for fish propagation at its last meeting.

50 years ago: The San Juan Group of the Colorado Mountain Club embarked from Needleton on a two-day “pack-in” to Chicago Basin.

25 years ago: Fort Lewis College security had to call for backup after a student pulled a gun on another student at Fort Lewis College.
