100 years ago: “The school board has employed Miss Majorie Vinton, who has been teaching at Bayfield, and Miss Marie Matley, as grade teachers for the coming season, subject to assignment by Superintendent Smiley. Miss Farwell, who had been employed, has tendered her resignation and will go to the Philippines to teach.”
75 years ago: “Albino brook trout, 100 of them, without any apparent body markings, and regarding their watery world through pink eyes are the property of the Durango Fish Hatchery.”
50 years ago: “Trail riders set off for a 10-day trip into the San Juan Wilderness, but not exactly the manner it originally had been planned. Some of the trails customarily used for this trip, which is sponsored by the American Forestry Assn., are blocked by snow. There are drifts as deep as 30 feet in spots.”
25 years ago: “The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is running full steam ahead after a train car derailed, forcing passengers to return to Durango by bus. No injuries were reported. ... A 15-member crew worked all night to put four wheels of the engine tender back on track after it derailed less than a mile from Rockwood. The engine tender is the car that carries the water and coal. It is located directly behind the locomotive.”
