And the West is History

50 years ago: Hunting in the Durango area may be good according to some reports, but the opening day of the 1966 deer and elk season in the Pagosa Springs area showed many disappointed hunters. A check at the locker plant there Saturday night showed that only two elk had been brought in on opening day and but a few deer. The reason given for little success so far in the Pagosa Springs area for elk hunting is the weather conditions.

25 years ago: Two men arrested in June while protesting logging activities in the San Juan National Forest were sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court. The men received one-year probation and community service and were assessed fines. They are excluded from entering the San Juan National Forest for six months without the consent of Federal Magistrate Dave West.
