This picture appeared in the Aug. 24, 1988, Herald. The cutline read: “Motorists on north Main Avenue have been wondering about this structure. It’s the visible outgrowth of a long-standing dispute between a doctor and the Pizza Hut next door. ... The plywood apparently has been strategically placed to block Pizza Hut’s sign from being seen by northbound motorists.”

100 years ago: “Arrange to take your better half or sweetheart to the dance at Redmen Hall. If you have neither, cut in and the boys will show you the opportunity.”

75 years ago: “Mrs. Ruby Fry has purchased the French Shoppe on East Ninth Street, from Gladys Hays (now Gladys Hays Church) and will be found by her many friends actively operating that establishment.”

50 years ago: This appeared in the section titled Girl About Town: “The Ladies Are Talking About: How much alike are the voices of District Judge James M. Noland and Dr. Joe Browning ... Josephine Fritz’s talented way with flowers. At a recent meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary she arranged a centerpiece of petunias in various shades of pink ... The smart and becoming brown jumper Mrs. Al Emigh is wearing.”

25 years ago: “School District 9-R lost up to $1.2 million in state funding for 1989 because a ‘gut judgement’ by state legislators says Durango’s economy doesn’t rely on tourism. The state re-categorized all public school districts this summer after the passage of the new school Finance Act. Durango was grouped as an ‘outlying city’ with districts in Sterling and Trinidad, which relay heavily on the agriculture industry.”
